How to maintain the Septic Tank and Septic System
If this happens, it is a difficult part to be handled, as you can pump out the tank but not the drainfield. And if this often repeated it can cause irreparable damage to the system and you may end up having to install new septic systems which can be quite expensive. So, proper maintenance should be taken care of and it can comfortably function properly for over twenty years. Always be aware about the location of the tank. This ways you can make sure that the tank goes through proper inspection and regular pumping. Also, this would ensure that you do not drive over the underground tank unknowingly causing any damage to it. If its location is not known to you, the records are always available with the city office or the town hall. You can also consider hiring a septic contractor who will be able to determine the exact location with the help of electronic detonators or long metal rods. Once the exact location is confirmed, make a map of it and place somewhere safely for future reference. Also you can mark the location with some immovable object like a stone. It is always recommended to undergo regular inspection of the tanks every three to five years. In case you use a garbage disposer or have a higher usage and consumption of water, it is suggested to get it inspected earlier than that. Overloading of the tanks can be avoided by limited use of showers and washing machines or any kind of other activity requiring a lot of water overflow. When you flush or throw water in the drains, it can cause damage to the septic system. So, it is always recommended not to flush tissue papers, paper towels, condoms, disposable diapers or feminine hygiene products into the drains. You should avoid using any chemicals like chlorine bleach in the drain. Although some disinfectants, cleaners and ammonia do not pose much threat to the system, still it is recommended to avoid usage of such products for the drains. Pouring of chemicals or solvents like motor oil, poisons, pesticides or drain cleaners is strictly not recommended. Avoid disposing grease, fats or coffee grounds in the garbage disposer. Minimized use of garbage disposers is suggested. There are a lot of products in the market which are meant to be used to clean the systems, can also damage the septic tank systems, as they can form sludge which can cause clogging in the tank or the drainfields. Checking it out with the local health department for state certification is a good option prior to usage of such products. Apart from all this, the best way is to ensure timely inspection and pumping of the septic system and it can work without trouble for years and years to come.
