Categories and Classes of various water damages that may lead to further damages of property and what a professional Emergency Restoration Contractor can do about it.
What are the different types of water damages?
Water damage is described by category, class and sometimes by level if potentially airborne contaminants are involved. Category describes the type of water, whether: clean water, brown water, sewage water, black water, or pathogen contaminated water. Classification(Class) describes the definition of damages caused by the water, as in: water confined to one room, two or more rooms, peak water saturation, peak water saturation traveling within building material, water saturation in overhead building material, and special circumstances of water damages, such as, frozen water damage. Level best describes the procedure in which the water damage is treated under containment, type of containment or no containment needed.
Categories and Classes of Water Damage by 24 Hour Restoration®
Category 1 Water Damage
Refers to a source of water that does not pose substantial threat to humans and classified as "Clean Water". Examples are broken water supply lines, ruptured clean water lines, tub or sink overflows or appliance malfunctions that involves water supply lines. Slab leaks that originate from in the footing.
Category 2 Water Damage
Refers to a source of water that contains a significant or higher degree of chemical, biological or physical contaminants and can cause illness or disease when exposed or even ingested. Known as "Grey Water", this type carries micro organisms and nutrients of micro organisms. Examples are toilet bowls with urine (no feces), sump pump failures, seepage due to hydrostatic failure and water discharge from un sanitary sources (Dishwashers, etc.). Category 1 water that has been in a potentially contaminated environment may also be classified as Grey Water. Left even longer, Category 1 or 2 can become, over time, Category 3.
Category 3 Water Damage
Known as "Black Water" and is incredible unsanitary. This water contains unsanitary agents, harmful bacteria and fungi, causing severe illness or disease. Type 3 categories are contaminated water sources that affect the indoor environment. This category includes water sources from sewage, seawater, rising water from rivers or streams, ground surface water or standing water. Category 2 Water or Grey Water that is not promptly removed from the structure and or have remained stagnant for 48-72 hours may be re classified as Category 3 Water. A toilet back flow that originates from beyond the toilet trap is considered black water contamination regardless of visible content or color.
Class I Water Loss
Some water extraction may be necessary. Small amount of personal property may be affected. This would be classified as class one and will dry the quickest.
Class II Water Loss
This class is the middle of the road for water extraction. Typically an entire room may be affected. Furniture, baseboards, carpet, carpet padding will be affected. Water extraction will be necessary and may require additional drying time to assure that your home/business is properly dried. Typical standards state that water damage is kept below the 24” mark.
Class III Water Loss
Usually Class 3 water wicks up walls and affects contents above 2 feet. This class requires heavy extraction from carpeting, padding, and any other porous materials that can trap moisture. Class 3 water losses may be from wind driven rain through a defective or damaged roof. Flooding from an outside source, etc
Class IV Water Loss
“Special Circumstances” This class is used in the rare occasion that the above classes do not apply. Special circumstances include freezing, special hazards and a variety of other "circumstances".
