Your Downstream Neighbor

YOUR DOWNSTREAM NEIGHBOR

My kind neighbor up the hill, who knows in some way that my work is related to wastewater, asked me the other day, “You know I have a septic system right? Well, I’m painting the upstairs at my house and I’m wondering where I should wash out my brushes.  Is it harmful to my system or to the environment?”  I thought to myself, I bet this is not the only person who ever pondered what to do in this situation.  Should I ask him into the house for a glass of cold paint?  I then quickly replied, “Please don’t wash them out in your sink.  Do you see that red thing right over there? That’s my well.”  My kind neighbor up the hill shrugged his shoulders and said, “Good thing I asked huh?”

Actually, household chemicals such as paints, solvents, and pesticides should never be disposed of down the drain.  They can disrupt biological activity in the system, and in many cases will not receive sufficient treatment to prevent groundwater or surface water contamination.  Do yourself, the environment, and your neighbor down the hill a favor.  Wash your used paint brushes out in an old bucket.  If you do not have curbside pick-up, you must dispose of chemicals like paints, solvents, and pesticides at a household hazardous waste disposal center.  When flushed down the toilet, even old prescription medications can disrupt your onsite system performance.  In Colorado , you can visit the website http://colorado.earth911.org to learn where your closest disposal site is located.  Visit the household hazardous waste section and search by zip code.  Remember, everyone has a downstream neighbor.

“Your Downstream Neighbor” is a new venue for asking questions regarding information related in any way to the onsite wastewater treatment industry.  Do you have a question about the state guidelines, new technologies, or new ideas?  Did you ever wonder how much water an average three bedroom house really uses?  The experts know the answers.  Our team of experts at FRPC has over 60 years of combined experience servicing clients in the onsite wastewater treatment industry.
